Associated Diseases (KEGG IDs)Alpha-fetoprotein deficiency (AFPD) [MIM:615969]: A benign condition characterized by undetectable AFP levels in the amniotic fluid. Affected individuals are asymptomatic and present normal development. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15280901, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18854864}. The disease is caused by mutations affecting the gene represented in this entry.; Alpha-fetoprotein, hereditary persistence (HPAFP) [MIM:615970]: A benign autosomal dominant condition characterized by continued expression of alpha-fetoprotein in adult life. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:7684942}. The disease is caused by mutations affecting the gene represented in this entry.
General Description of alpha Fetoprotein .
alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a single chain glycoprotein of 70 kDa that is normally expressed in the fetal liver, gastrointestinal tract and yolk sac. This antibody recognizes an epitope of alpha-fetoprotein present in human and several other species.

alpha Fetoprotein Information for Pathologists

Summary:

Major plasma protein of early fetus; present in fetal gut, liver and yolk sac (Wikipedia). Serum levels may be elevated if severe hypothyroidism (J Pediatr Endocrinol Metab 2012;25:761). Uses by pathologists Serum marker:. Elevated in maternal serum or amniotic fluid ( > 2.5 multiples of median at a specified gestational age) if fetal developmental anomalies.

Common Uses By Pathologists:

Serum marker:. Elevated in maternal serum or amniotic fluid ( > 2.5 multiples of median at a specified gestational age) if fetal developmental anomalies. Serum tumor marker elevated in patients with hepatoblastoma (eMedicine), hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatoid adenocarcinoma, testicular cancer (other than pure seminoma) and yolk sac tumor, but not in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (Am Surg 2010;76:1210). Preoperative levels are prognostic for hepatocellular carcinoma (World J Surg Oncol 2013;11:212). Immunostain:.
