Associated Diseases (KEGG IDs) Multiple endocrine neoplasia 4 (MEN4) [MIM:610755]: Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes are inherited cancer syndromes of the thyroid. MEN4 is a MEN-like syndrome with a phenotypic overlap of both MEN1 and MEN2. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17030811}. The disease is caused by mutations affecting the gene represented in this entry.
General Description of p27Kip1 .
p27Kip1 is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor involved in G1 arrest. p27Kip1 binds to and inhibits CyclinE-Cdk2 complex, cyclinA-CDK2 and cyclinD1-CDK4 complexes. P27Kip1 is regulated by phosphorylation and the site of phosphorylation determines the fate of the protein, whether it is degraded or exported out of the nucleus to the cytoplasm. The expression of p27Kip1 is high in normal cells. Down regulation of p27Kip1 is found in many types of cancer, and decreased expression of p27Kip1 is associated with poor prognosis in several tumors, including lung, breast, colorectal and prostate.
