Prior to use, inspect vial for the presence of any precipitate or other unusual physical properties. These can indicate that the antibody has degraded and is no longer suitable for patient samples. Please run positive and negative controls simultaneously with all patient samples to account and control for errors in laboratory procedure. Use of methods or materials not recommended by enQuire Bio including change to dilution range and detection system should be routinely validated by the user.
CD138 Information for Pathologists
Summary:
CD138, Aka heparan sulfate proteoglycan, syndecan-1, mediates cell adhesion, and growth factors activity. It is acquired during late stage of B cell differentiation. Loss of CD138 expression is associated with tumor aggressiveness in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of head and neck and larynx. CD138 levels also reduced in invasive SCC but not in SCC in situ.
Common Uses By Pathologists:
CD138 staining is typically observed in B cell precursors, plasma cells, stratified squamous epithelium, keratoacanthoma, myeloma, plasmablastic lymphoma (strong), primary effusion lymphoma, pyothorax associated lymphoma, and other CD138+ carcinomas. Mature B cells, and other lymphomas (even plasmacytoid lymphomas) are usually negative for CD138. Altered syndecan-1 (CD138) expression has been detected in several different tumor types. Loss of CD138 expression is associated with tumor aggressiveness in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of head and neck and larynx; levels also reduced in invasive SCC but not in SCC-in situ.

General Description of CD138 . | |
CD138, also known as Syndecan-1, is a member of the transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan family, acts as an extracellular matrix receptor and is involved in many cellular functions, including cell-cell adhesion and cell-matrix adhesion. CD138 expression is found in both hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells. In the hematopoietic system, CD138 labels plasma cells. It is an excellent marker for plasmacytic differentiation within the spectrum of hematologic malignancy. Among non-hematolymphoid cells, CD138 reactivity is observed in many types of epithelial cells and stoma cells in both normal and tumor tissues. |
