Associated Diseases (KEGG IDs)The reduction in the surface charge of citrullinated and/or methylated MBP could result in a weakened attachment to the myelin membrane. This mechanism could be operative in demyelinating diseases such as chronical multiple sclerosis (MS), and fulminating MS (Marburg disease).
General Description of Myelin Basic Protein .
This antibody reacts with human myelin basic protein and oligodendrocytes of white matter in brain and spinal cord. Grey matter stains weakly. This antibody stains peripheral nerves also.

Myelin Basic Protein Information for Pathologists

Summary:

MBP is important in myelination of nerves (reported in both central and peripheral nerves). Myelination of nerves and the formation of the myelin sheath is critical to rapid conduction of neural impulses along axons. Several studies have suggested that auto antibodies against MBP are linked to development of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Notable Clinical Features:

Myelin Basic protein in CSF above levels of 4 ng/ml is indicative myelin breakdown which is linked to MS. MBP staining is reported as a sensitive marker of myelenation.

Common Uses By Pathologists:

Neuromas, Neurofi bromas, and Neurogenic Sarcomas have been reported as staining postive for MBP. However, other spindle-cell neoplasms are typically negative. MBP staining of Granular-cell tumors is useful in supportinga Schwann-cell derivation of these lesions. Unlike other nervous system proteins such as GFAP and S-100, MBP has not been demonstrated in melanocytes or tumors derived from melanocytes.

Limitations and Warranty

This antibody is manufactured in accordance with clinical good manufacturing practices in an ISO13485:2016 certified production facility. It is intended for multiple uses including in vitro diagnostic use and research use only applications. Please see vial label for expiration date. We strive to always deliver antibodies with a shelf life of at least two years.
